Emily Dickinson xD

3. “Poets often withhold certitude, which can at the same time empower readers to think creatively.” Consider the works of at least two poets you have studied in which ambiguity has enabled readers to reach their own conclusions about meaning and implications.

  • Well Emily Dickinson has definitely used ambiguity (the quality of being open to more than one interpretation; inexactness.)  in her poems. I have read a few but one that stuck out to me the most was the poem she wrote about sunrises. The reason it stuck out to me was because of the way she wrote and because of how sensitive it was. Emily Dickinson puts a lot of meaningful things in her poems and her word choices made it quite emotional. She rarely uses full sentences, which makes it a lot easier to understand and read, but she also uses a lot of similes and comparisons which in my opinion are key to a good poem was interesting. Emily Dickinson has more than one way to describe the sunrise. In her poem she says “A Ribbon at a time – The steeples swam in Amethyst. The news, like Squirrels, ran – The Hills untied their Bonnets…..” To me it seems as if she sees the sunset as the start of a new day (which makes sense). All of these things, help the reader to explore their own views. Emily Dickinson never says “This is what a sunrise should look like” no, she gives the reader the opportunity to imagine, and create their own views. I am not sure if this answered the question correctly but I wrote down what I could.

MLMLstaging

It would be a drama. It would be a big stage with a curtain, lights and music! The only difference is that I would change the ending. I want Desiree to turn into a butterfly or something because in the book she is so dependent on these butterflies (papillons). I believe Desiree is a force to be reckon with. In the book she helps many people, so I want to continue to give her that ability. The whole purpose of the curtains is to have a dramatic affect. When Agwe (God of the waters) sends his storm. I want the curtains to close and the lights go off except for one light on Desiree and Daniel(her lover). I want them all huddled in front of the curtain with lightning affects as well as the sound of thunder and heavy rain. When the storm is all over that's whine they curtains will open up to reveal the damage. I think it has a more dramatic affect and that's why I would use it a lot in my staging. For each new scene the curtains will close so the stage setup can get changed. So basically the curtain will close when we are transitioning from low lands (her village) to church. Then from there to the woods and other village. From there to outside and inside of castle. That's another thing I would change, I image Daniel living in a castle not some rich hotel. He gets treated like royalty so I want to make that come to life more. I see this story as almost a fairytale with a sad ending. The lighting will be mainly dimly lit with candles at night, during the day it will be brighter. Also, when inside the castle the lighting with also be dim to give its  more gloomy look since the story itself ends up becoming gloomy and depressing. Characters would be Desiree (Ti Moune), Daniel (Her lover) Gabriel (Daniels father) Agwe( God of water), Eruzlie (Goddess of love) and Papa Ge( Messenger of Death). Asaka wouldn't really be in this because I feel as if she doesn't have a very important part in the text. Therefore I would probably have Desiree and Agwe as well as Eruzlie mention Asaka, but she nerve actually makes an appearance.

Desire vs. Community

Ti Moune is very different from her community because she tends to view the world a lot differently than the rest of them. In the text M. Bienconnu says " To be tranquil one must hang ones hat where one can reach it." He is saying this because Desiree wants to leave and look for Daniel but M. Bienconnu knows what has happened in the past and tells Desiree it will not work out. Desiree tends to think that she can overcome/beat the past when in reality the past has tended to repeat itself many times before. M. Bienconnu is wise while Desiree is immature.

Desiree Costume

If I had to give Desiree a costume to show how she is different from everyone else... U would dress her in something that's tight fitting yet not too revealing. I feel like he lashes would be long to show off her eyes and her lips would always have something on them whether it be Chap stick or lip-gloss. Also, seems to me that Desiree bathes a lot more than the other villagers do. So she wouldn't be as dirty, and she would have no shoes! Non at all. Also, her hair would be a little messy with maybe a flower sticking out, but I feel like it would be up on a messy bun... Or in a messy ponytail to keep it tame. Desiree shows a lot of natural beauty. Her teeth would be pearly white and her hair would be long and wavy but as I said before, in a messy updo or even possible two French braids. Also, maybe her dress will have a splash of color, not a huge noticeable amount but enough to distinguish herself from everyone else.

6-9 notes

Chapter 6

Weeds, grass, plants jumped to life.
  • Things started to get better after the flood

Peasants worked with renewed vigor, clearing dead branches from their plots and rebuilding homes. Soon venders dotted the road again
  • Rebuilding lives.

Desiree felt no joy in the awakening life around her.
  • No longer cares, all she can think about is Daniel.

Mama Euralie regarded her with suspicion. And  it hovered over Desiree like a weight, depressing her, shackling her to the village.
  • Euralie clearly does not want Desiree to leave, but Des does not want to stay. She feels as if she is being forced to stay.

Gabriel Beauxhomme fell in love with a peasant girl and she had a child- A boy. Then came our great war. Father and son fought on opposite sides. Son fought for Revolution, Father fought for France and Napoleon.  Father killing son.
  • Father and son had different beliefs and therefore took it out on one another to the point where the son took over his father's palace and cast out anyone loyal to his father.
  • Father cursed son

History has cast our fate in stone. - Monsieur Bienconnu.
  • Telling Ti Moune that there is no way Daniel can love her based on what happened in the past. There is no way
  • Ti Moune is not happy about this, does not want to listen to him. Very immature and basis.

The road is hard for men and mules. It can be death for a little girl- TonTon
  • Warns Ti Moune about the journey. Ti Moune does not want to listen
  • Pulls away from his affection fast, wanting to leave before Mama came home

I have no fear- Ti Moune
  • I found this interesting because it's so not true. She fears many things

TonTon give me your blessings to leave and I'll be gone- Ti Moune
  • I find it interesting that she asks him for his blessing but not her Mama.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Chapter 7
She kept her mind on the old woman's hands. She had to tear away the instant it loosened.
  • Trying to escape from Mama as quickly as possible so she can leave

To stay? To risk her love, and perhaps Daniels life, on a whim of the gods?- Ti Moune
  • I found this interesting because now she's doubting herself a bit.

But young strength is no match for old determination. Mama Euralie recaptured Desiree’s hand and pulled her along.
  • TRUE!!

But the old woman feared no shadow, she feared losing Ti Moune
  • Mama is more afraid of losing her daughter (her support rock) than creepy shadows.

Agwe, your child has come
  • They were calling out to Agwe- God of water

He Turned and smiles at her. Ti Moune screamed.
  • She was terrified of Papa Gi.

Doubts arose. What if, on that stormy night, Agwe and Erzulie had not heard her plea?
  • Really starting to doubt herself.

My Daughter… petite enfant whom i abandoned on that hill these years...Her mother
  • Ti Mounes Mother talked to Ti Moune through a man's body

I do not hold you to the vow you made on that stressful night. - Erzulie
  • I don't think she fully agrees with Ti Moune but she doesn't blame her for the way she reacted to death.

You are already responsible for her mother's death! Erzulie
  • Agwe was the reason Ti Mounes mother died.

It's you who caused Asaka pain,  Agwe, Erzulie said. It's your rage that destroys her. It's your rage that erodes her power as you let this slip land bit by bit into the sea
  • Agwe mis treats other gods

Agwe you have gone mad Asaka was your lover your sister and your friend!
  • Asaka was most likely his lover

But I shall not have my power eroded bit by bit, because of the weakness of lesser gods.
  • He thinks he is above all over gods.

But with a sudden, wicked smile, the lips of the toothless mouth parted. Erzulie, Agwe said, sweet seductive. He snaked up to her so that they study hip touching hip. What we need is a grant romance that is all that can save us.
  • Agwe is just as bad if not worse than papa Gi.

I came to make certain that those given in trust be kept in trust the evil demon said
  • Jerk

Desiree felt his hot breath fan her cheek. She screamed, smashed her hand away from mama Euralie, and ran.
  • She got scared of Papa Gi.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Chapter 8

Hunted, hunted, Desiree slipped from shadow to shadow, putting distance between herself and those who loved her, her home, her brook, her past.
  • She gave up everything-selfish

The peasant girl walked on for miles. At midday exhausted she searched for and found a large tree, and curled but need that sheltering branches.
  • Right where she started from!

The animals were her friends. They kept a respectful distance as she did with them but in times of danger, or with the approach of evil, they were sure to warn her.
  • Almost as if a disney movie lol

Agwe, tall, beautiful, his lofty head of the richest blue green seaweed decorated and gold shredded back and forth as he had in the houngfor, his wicked eyes a blazing blue.
  • Handsome seductive man

Asaka sat so game. Looking drab in ragged and a brown dress.
  • Made her seem less of a god and more of a peasant

Desiree had already traveled one night in a part of one day.
  • Determination

He's very ill. He needs me, Desiree answered.
  • Still thinks daniel is ill. Vert Bias

They looked first at Desiree's dick, uncombed hair and her ragged dress, then stretch out there next to pier down at the pageant girls feet. They laughed. Their laughter travel down the road from vendor to vendor so that at one moment laughter followed her, and soon the laughter preceded her.
  • Everyone made fun of her, treated her like a joke.

Desiree kept on walking. The laughter of the vendors confused and shamed her but the road was faster than the woods and of what importance was their laughter when compared with her dear Daniel lying your death at the castle.
  • She was hurt, confused even, but determined to keep going.

Desiree felt gloom descending. Fear and determination had brought her through these first two nights and days. How was it she still had so far to go?
  • Did not think it would take so long (said she had no fear before) !!!

Her aching stomach brought tears to her eyes.

Ti Moune give up easy die easy oui
  • Kind words from villager

With patients we have learned to examine the bowels of a louse. I have much to learn about patients mama Desiree replied

Desiree thanked the woman and then went into the forest found a soft spot beneath the tree and ate all the food the woman had given her it didn't concern her that she might be hungry again.
  • NOT SMART.. Shows her immaturity

The kindness of the woman had for stored her faith.
  • Good, help from others

………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Chapter 9

When she woke the sun was descending in the sky in the water shimmered a brilliant pink.

Agwe, he was not so ruthless after all. For surely it was he who I sent this lovely child to her.

One wishes, and protects ones dreams.

Was it always be a butterfly the girl asked. Always the peasant girl replied the bigger and the more beautiful the better.

Yes, then you must release them so they may be free again to give hope for the future to somebody else.

Then it's not your dream. One person's dream might be another person's nightmare.

Your patience can often turn the most cross person into a person of kindness. So that if, at one time, one might not give you grillot , they will always give you bread.

Grace: Knock~Knock~ Hey little sis, may I come in? (knocks the door, slightly opens the door and enters)
(*No answer*)
(*Grace slowly approches caroline*)
Grace: Are you ok? mom and I are worried about you. (sits next to Caroline)
Caroline: *Sniffles*I’m ok. Just leave me alone! I don’t feel like talking right now.
Dead father: Wait..Are they Grace and Caroline?..Oh..my daughters. (sigh) So glad I can still see you here.
Grace: (*Puts arm around caroline*)Okok, but you didn’t eat anything. Don’t treat yourself like that. I believe dad also doesn’t wanna see that. Right?
Dead father: Oh, Caroline, my little trouble maker, go and have dinner with mom!

Grace: (sigh, trembling sound but tries to calm down) You know sis. He fought long and hard, but the cancer spread too fast and he couldn't keep up anymore. If he had the chose to stay, he would have.
Caroline: But…...I still have many things want to tell him… He can’t listen to me any more. I want papa back!!(crying, puting head between legs)

                                                       left side lights off.
Grace: Listen sis.. Do you really want to meet dad again? (serious)
Caroline: Yes! But how?
Grace: Maybe..that’s too risky..I doubt we should listen to Ma
Caroline: Tell me! Tell me! Grace! please…
(show her two red pants) Grace: Ma said, start from today, we need to wear these red pants every night. In Ma’s family, the widows often wore blood-red panties so that their dead husbands would not come back and lie down next to them at night. And daughters who looked a lot like the widowed mother should also wear those panties, so that if they were ever mistaken for her, they will be safe. You know.. because dad is gone..so...Ma gives me them...Maybe..maybe
Caroline: maybe if we don’t wear them… Dad could come back!!
(Grace nods)Grace: Are you afraid of ghost?
Caroline: I will never afraid of papa!
(Grace and Caroline go to sleep)
SCENE END

Scene 2:
Dad: Felt anxious to rush down. . Where am I ? ( touches his pocket) ah? What is this? ( Find out a note)
The note said: The penultimate. Or the last twelfth.
This is the dream of someone who misses you so strongly..
At the time when the bell rings three times is the time you need return.
Do not touch the person you are familiar with!  (Father read out)
(He sees Caroline and Grace figure far away, and he can hear their voice) ah. . Is their dream
(Very slowly approached)
Grace: Where am I? I’m not suppose to be here..I’m on my way home. (looks around)
Wait a minute.. Where - is - my - home ? Am I in Haiti right now? No..no..that’s impossible.
(flute music)
Caroline: Grace! Where did you go? I asked you to wait for me!
Grace: Caro..Caroline! You are Caroline!
Caroline: Of course I am! What’s wrong with you?
Grace: Your arm..is back!! Why? I mean.. I couldn’t believe my eyes!
Caroline: What are you talking about? My arm? Back? Come on.. it’s always there, sis. Are you ok? You might be sick…
Grace: I’m ok. I’m ok..
(turn around, bite on arm) It doesn’t hurt…….Now, everything make sense. It’s a dream.
Caroline: Hurry up! Hurry up! He is waiting for us! We don’t have that much time left!
Grace: Who? Who is waiting?
Caroline: See! Papa! He is right there! Papa! Papa! (waves)
(Father, waving his hands)
(Two daughters, felt joyful, ran up): Dad, we miss you. . where did you go?    ( Together)
(His father reached out, wanted to touch the two daughters’ heads, but suddenly remembered the phrase "You can not touch the person who you are familiar with." Hand stopped in the air, a few seconds, puts down)
Father (muttered): No. . I cant do that.
(Her daughter step forward,  his father step down once, then  her daughter stepped forward, then father step back again. )
Father: No, you can not come!   … Silence  Daddy really had a good time with you, and dad missed you, too. Caroline, you little bastard, Did you cry in the midnight? That’s not good.  Listen to your mom’s advice,  the bone soup mom cooked every day you needed to drink it. Grace did well, you grew up a lot, papa was very pleased. More and more looks like a sister. You have to take good care of yourselves, also take good care of your mother. I'm sorry I can not protect you anymore, but you have to believe that I love you  forever . Dad will bless you. .
Grace: No!dad. We can not live without you.  We have a lot of words to say to you.
(Bells sounded three times)
Dad: Time to leave, remember stay safely, my dear!

Grace: No! No!!Dad please don’t leave us!
Caroline: Grace! Grace, wake up!
Grace: Ah.. It’s a dream...Oh my god.. Dad…
Caroline: Did you also dream about dad?
Grace: Yeah.. You too?! And..and in my dream, your arm is back!
Caroline: I guess we must have the same dream
Grace: Probably.. Papa did came back..Do you remember what did dad say?
Caroline: Yes, but not all of them. He wanted us to be strong, and he will always be with us. Sis, that’s his wish!
Grace: You are right. We shouldn’t let him down. We need to take care of ourselves and Ma. And if we miss him, we can always call him back. Cause he’s always there! Caroline, don’t tell Ma about the dream. Otherwise, she will be mad with us. And remember to hide your red pants carefully.
Caroline: So glad we can see him again.

Scene 4:
Grace: Time to go to bed sis. Hope you can enjoy the last night before your wedding.
Caroline: I know, but I don't want to, I miss dad, Do you think Dad will agree me marry Eric?
Grace: Of course he will. Don’t you remember he has been always looking for us?
Caroline: Yeah. Time flies. You and me are no longer little girls. By the way, did you remember the game that dad taught us? Let's play it.
Grace: do you mean that free association game? Ok,sure
Darker light. Caroline: who are you?
Grace: I am the lost child of the night.
Caroline: where do you from?
Grace: I come from the inside of the lost stone.
Caroline: where are your eyes?
Grace: I have eyes lost behind my head, where they can best protect me.
Caroline: who is your mother.
Grace: she who is the lost mother of all.
Caroline: who is your father?
Grace: he who is the lost father of all.
Silent…..
Caroline: ok I think I have nothing to ask.. So good night and have a nice dream sis. love you Grace: Good night. love you too.
-------Dream-------
Dad: Caroline..Caroline..
Caroline: Papa! You haven’t come to my dream for a long time
Dad:

Information:
We sat facing each other in the dark, playing a free-association game that Ma had taught us when we were girls. “Who are you?” Caroline asked me. “I am the lost child of the night.” “Where do you come from?” “I come from the inside of the lost stone.” “Where are your eyes?” “I have eyes lost behind my head, where they can best protect me.” “Who is your mother?” “She who is the lost mother of all.” “Who is your father?” “He who is the lost father of all.”
In the dream they would chase after him but never reach him.
Mrs. Ruiz, the family’s Cuban neighbor, is hosting her large extended family for a celebration with blaring rumba music. Caroline and Grace observe the proceedings from a window. Caroline tells Grace that last month Mrs. Ruiz’s son was killed trying to hijack a plane in Havana so he could fly it to Miami.
Caroline buys her wedding dress from Goodwill, mom decides to wear a pink gown, and Grace will wear a green suit.
Her father got a visa by entering into a fake marriage with a widow leaving Haiti for America. In exchange for some money, the woman took his last name. A few years after arriving stateside, Grace’s father divorced the widow and sent for mom and Grace.

They discuss how Hermine and her husband always feared Caroline would settle for someone less than she deserved because of her missing forearm. That’s the real reason Hermine doesn’t approve of Eric: she thinks Caroline is afraid that no other man will come along.

Last thing, after marriaged, went to honeymoon, dad stood.

Costume:
Betty (Caroline)- Pajamas
Kat (Grace)- Pajamas
Kevin( Dead Father/Peterson)- All white except pants

Props:
Clouds (Making at home)- Kat
Halo- Kevin
Sparkles
Pillows

Light/ sound
- Kevin's side needs to me bright (white). But when Kevin's scene is done, his light should dim down to signify that he is done talking. And that his scene is coming to an end.
- Our side needs to be dark, maybe like a dark red. But while Kevin is talking there should be no light shining near us because it's HIS "spotlight"

- As for sound cues, Kevin's should have a holy sound to start off with, like angels singing when he wakes up on Heaven. Later on in the play, when Grace and Caroline wake up, their should be birds calling. That's to signify that is day time. Kevin or (dead father/Peterson) can only talk to the girls when they are asleep and dreaming. He can't communicate with them in the morning. So when he hears the birds singing and sees grace and Caroline starting to wake up, he has no choice but to leave.
